We are on a mission, people! The mission is to find the best cruelty-free concealers out there. And to make matters easier for you, we have visited many products and have whittled down our list to the top 8 contenders. Remember, when you’re looking for cruelty-free products, look for the Leaping Bunny certification on the packaging. That is the universal mark to let you know that the product in your hand has no testing done on an animal in any stage of its production.
“Cruelty-free” is a buzzword that has been heard around cosmetic and personal care products for 20 years. So, what does it truly mean to be cruelty-free? A company that claims to be cruelty-free is stating that none of their products were tested on animals nor was any outsourced testing conducted on animals.
However, there is a fine distinction between ‘cruelty-free’ and ‘vegan’ cosmetics. That distinction lies in whether the product contains animal ingredients. As an example, take beeswax. Beeswax is classified as vegetarian, which means it is cruelty-free. However, vegan purists will tell you as beeswax is a product made by animals, it cannot be classified as vegan. This means, the all-time favorite lip balm Burt’s Bees is cruelty-free, but it is not vegan.
Therefore, our search has been conducted under the banner of cruelty-free and these are, in no particular order, our top picks of the best cruelty-free concealers.
The Best Cruelty-Free Concealers:
1. Tarte Shape Tape – Our Top Pick
Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer has quickly gained cult status. With 30 colors to choose from, there is one for everyone! A ‘holy grail’ product, the consistency is thick and it goes on creamy but use a light hand when applying as a little goes a long way! Once you’ve used the doe-foot applicator to dot the product on, we suggest using a cruelty-free brush or sponge to blend it – that will give you an airbrushed finish. And work fast because once this guy sets, it does not budge!
No settling into creases, hardly any breakdown, just true opacity. But be warned, if you have dry skin, this may not be the product for you – in fact, you may want to skip it altogether. We recommend using a little eye cream with your prep so it can sit comfortably throughout the day. The coverage is full-on and feels smooth to the touch, as though it has melted into your skin. If you use it stingily, it will yield great results and great savings too!
2. Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer
|Coverage:||Full to medium|
Kat Von D is known to create full coverage makeup and she doesn’t hold back! This product is no exception. It is rich, creamy, thick and pigmented. Ideal for spot concealing, a little goes a long way with this guy. If you have oily skin, we advise baking the concealer when applied under the eyes, for it may crease. The best part about this product is that it blends like a dream! And once it dries, it ready for long haul day. We highly recommend this product.
3. Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer
We cannot praise this product enough! Urban Decay is a cult favorite brand and its products sell like hotcakes. This concealer has medium coverage, which means you can wear this on its own on a bare face too! Its unique flocked applicator delivers the perfect amount of product. The product is on the thin side, but it blends like a dream, right into the skin – we recommend you use a sponge as a brush can cause it to streak. That said, this product is not recommended for mature skin, and its thin texture tends to settle into the fine lines if it isn’t baked into place immediately. This product has no fragrance is well suited for sensitive skin.
4. Kylie Cosmetics Concealer
Kylie Cosmetic just keeps upping their game with each new product and their concealers are game-changers. With medium coverage and a satin, skin-like finish, this product goes on smooth and you can build it up or sheer it out (which is why their darker colors make for wonderful contour products). The texture is creamy and smooth and if you powder it, it locks into place. Oily skin types are warned that this product may crease, therefore baking is recommended. There’s something about this concealer that has a subtle blurring effect that disguises uneven skin textures – like yawning pores! The color ‘Bone’ is a hot favorite as it is the chosen shade to highlight the high points of your face if you have fair skin. We highly recommend this guy!
5. Milani Retouch and Erase Light Lifting Concealer
|Coverage:||Full to medium|
Okay, so we have a love/hate relationship with this guy. We love Milani. But this concealer has an awful applicator! Also, it creases on oily skin. And that’s where the hate ends. So why did this make the top ten? Because once you rip the sponge tip-off, you have a winner on your hands. This product is on the thicker side of creamy and on the fuller side of medium coverage. It’s buildable to the point that it can conceal a tattoo (so you KNOW it can hide dark circles). You can blend the product out with a brush or even your ring finger and once you bake it, it’s not going anywhere for at least 5 hours! And in our books, a product like this is a keeper.
6. NYX HD Photogenic Concealer Wand
This concealer has had very polarizing reviews, but here is our stance. If you have normal to combination skin, then you’re in for a treat! The consistency of the product is creamy and it blends like a dream. The fair shades are very fair while the dark makes for lovely contouring colors. If you have dry skin, please use an eye cream 10 minutes before you apply the concealer as it can be drying. The coverage is buildable and we recommend using a sponge to blend the concealer into your skin. Then, bake the product, finish it with a setting spray and we promise, it isn’t moving. If you don’t, this guy tends to crease and look a little cakey. But with a little love and care, you have a keeper on your hands.
7. L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealer
One of the best-kept secrets in makeup is this bad boy. This concealer is a lightweight product that packs a heavyweight punch. The coverage is full, the finish is matte and the texture is THICK! But it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin, at all! In fact, it feels like a thin, silicone-y film sitting on your skin. And because it is thick, we recommend that you squeeze a little product onto the back of your hand and apply it with a sponge applicator and work fast. This guy wants to lock down fast – which means minimal to no caking or creasing! Now depending on how much oil your skin produced, this concealer may breakdown after about 5 hours of wear, especially around the nose. So do moisturize your skin beforehand. Other than that, this concealer is a winner!
8. Bare Minerals BarePro 16-Hour Full Coverage Concealer
This concealer is such a luxe product! The twist-up tube holds a creamy bullet that is not shy with the coverage. A little goes a long with this product and once you blend it through with a sponge, you have a demi-matte finish – meaning, it has some radiance in the formula. Now the one thing you need to be mindful of is that this creamy product reacts to body heat; so, if you plan on dancing the night away, we recommend you take some additional precautions, such as a primer, baking the product and locking it with a setting spray. Only then can you take it to its 16-hour breaking point. Easy to use and to touch-up, this concealer can easily stow away in your ‘on-the-go’ makeup bag.
This rounds up our top selection for best cruelty-free concealers. One of the biggest pet peeves that people have with concealers is that they can be too drying. But don’t worry, there are many concealers for dry skin too! Our selection focused on top brands that are completely cruelty-free and have long-lasting coverage that can withstand a full day (with or without the assistance of baking and spraying).
By purchasing cruelty-free products, you have the satisfaction of knowing that no animals were involved in the making of the product in your hand. The Leaping Bunny Program has strict standards and guidelines that over 1,300 companies have subscribed to and have attained their cruelty-free certification. The shift towards cruelty-free has seen over 150 cosmetic companies adopt the change and new makeup brands have started their journey as cruelty-free. So, animal lover, you can rest easy now that you know that our fur babies are in good hands and you can indulge guilt (and cruelty) free!
Finally, no bunnies were harmed in the research for this post.
