The 8 Best Cruelty-Free Deodorants

| | ,

Our constant endeavor for cruelty-free beauty has found us hunting for an intimate product that everyone uses – deodorant, cruelty-free, of course. While we agree that personal hygiene is not a glamorous subject to discuss, it is a very real matter, especially if animal welfare is your concern.

Deodorants and antiperspirants are personal products and the type of product chosen is a matter of preference too. Whether you prefer sticks, sprays or roll-ons, the right product should not only be against animal testing, but it should also be effective too.

It is important to note that deodorant and an antiperspirant are two different products: a deodorant kills the smell but it doesn’t stop you from sweating; an antiperspirant, on the other hand, essentially plugs your sweat ducts. The active ingredient in both of these products is aluminum and it is this ingredient that takes the spotlight on the cruelty-free stage. It is very difficult to find aluminum that is cruelty-free, and then there is the added debate that aluminum usage may lead to an increased risk of breast cancer, but there is no confirmed study on this account.

As we discussed in our post on cruelty-free foundations, a product that claims to be cruelty-free must be certified by the Leaping Bunny organization that their ingredients have never been tested on animals, nor has any outsourced testing been conducted on animals.

We have, after much trial and testing, found our top selections for cruelty-free deodorants which are both free from animal testing and actually work.

Our Top Cruelty-Free Deodorants :

1. Agent Nateur Holi (Stick) Deodorant

Agent Nateur Holi (Stick) Deodorant

This is a natural product that has been created using food-grade ingredients, such as organic coconut oil, baking soda, honey, eucalyptus globulus, etc. The natural ingredients in this product have resulted in polarizing reviews, but we can chalk that one up to body chemistry. The first thing to note is that this is a deodorant, therefore, you will sweat. Moreover, it will take your body time to readjust from the switch from synthetic products to this natural cruelty-free deodorant, but it is possible. If you can wear natural fabrics, like cotton, and use this product regularly, it can eventually withstand a gym workout! Just power through the transition period and you can thank us after.

2. Certain Dri Antiperspirant

Certain Dri Antiperspirant

This is a clinical strength deodorant that contains aluminum and is cruelty-free! Sounds almost too good to be true, but it the real deal. It is recommended that you use this deodorant at night only, however, we have found that, after a transition period, this deodorant can keep people dry day and night. Just be mindful to dry the area of the application completely before swiping it on as water may not let the product fully coat the area. The only downside to this product is that it is a little streaky – so if you are going to wear black, just be careful when you pull your clothes over your arms. Other than that, we have a wonderful product here.

3. Lavanila Deodorant

Lavanila Cruelty Free Deodorant

We would consider this cruelty-free deodorant a luxury product, you get a small amount for a pretty penny, but that penny is oh-so-worth-it! Lavanila deodorant is formulated for a gym workout, and if it can stand up to that, it is a winner in any book. As far as application goes, if you live in a warm clime, we suggest you keep this guy in your bag, as you may need a touch-up. The product is a little firmer than usual deodorants and it may streak ever so slightly, but we have noticed that it works immediately, without a transition period! You will need to reapply it after the gym shower, but it will keep you smell-free while you are working out. Oh, and it smells like fresh laundry, in case you were wondering.

4. Each & Every Aluminum-Free Deodorant

Each & Every Aluminum-Free Deodorant

The biggest selling point is that this natural deodorant contains no baking soda! Those with sensitive skin can rejoice! It has been made with essential oils, so it smells natural and fresh, and there is no musky after-scent. This cruelty-free deodorant is unique because not only is it good for sensitive skin, it is aluminum-free, has a creamy texture and most importantly, it does not stain! It uses magnesium salt instead of baking soda and has a wide array of scents to choose from, including no scent! This product goes on smooth and there are no white streaks, so it is black-tee approved! This deodorant has ticked a lot of boxes that other only partially tick, which has made it a hot favorite on our list.

5. Freedom Natural Deodorant

Freedom Natural Cruelty-Free Deodorant

This deodorant is made from natural ingredients such as beeswax, coconut oil, baking soda, and shea butter. It is scented with sweet-smelling essential oils that leave behind no musty or musky smells. But here’s the best part – unlike other cruelty-free deodorants, this can last up to 24 hours! Now we conducted a gym test, and yes, it was able to withstand a cardio class, but reapplication was needed out of the shower – which is standard for all deodorants. It leaves you smelling fresh, even in humid climates, so in our book, we have yet another winner. Oh, and it’s unisex!

6. Jack Black Pit Boss Antiperspirant and Deodorant

Jack Black Pit Boss Antiperspirant and Deodorant

This is a cruelty-free deodorant that has been marketed for men, but don’t let that stop you! This formula is a two-in-one deal that uses FDA approved aluminum that keeps you dry and smelling fresh. It’s other claim to fame is that it’s loaded with the goodness of Vitamin E and Aloe that doesn’t leave you feeling uncomfortable or itchy. Users have worn it in hot and humid climes and have commented that despite the hot conditions, this formula hasn’t ‘broken a sweat’, so to speak. It is streak-free, mess-free and goes on smooth, without leaving behind any strange residue. Even though it comes with a hefty price tag, we still love it for all the love it shows to sensitive skin.

7. Kaia Naturals Takesumi Detox Deodorant

Kaia Naturals Takesumi Detox Deodorant

Okay, this guy is pricy. We will be the first to admit that it is not everyone’s cup of tea, however, boy oh boy, does it work wonders! The product in the stick is black but it goes on colorless. It is formulated with natural ingredients and is recommended for people with sensitive skin. While we’re big fans of this product, it comes with the caveat – the love for this product grows after the initial detox phase. This means that you better keep this product handy and be ready to apply it as often as 4 times a day for 2 weeks until your body has assimilated and you are officially odor-free! Now, this is a deodorant, which means it will not keep you dry, but it will keep you smelling fresh. That said, some users have claimed that it acted as an antiperspirant too, but that was not our experience. We love it because it feels and smells amazing!

8. Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant

Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant

Surprise! Big companies are taking the pledge and shifting towards cruelty-free products and we’re happy to tell you that one of your drugstore staples had joined those elite. This formula is created using FDA approved aluminum that works to stop you sweating – so effective is it’s power that it can be used as a safeguard against chafing since this product is essentially a spray-on powder that keeps the affected area dry! And if you like your scents, Dove Dry Spray has a wide array of scents for you to choose from, to remain smelling fresh and clean all day long! We love this product for it’s price and multifunctionality.

Final word

Remember, when you’re looking for products that cruelty-free, look for the Leaping Bunny certification on the packaging. That is the universal mark to let you know that the product in your hand has no testing done on an animal in any stage of it’s production or on the ingredients sourced for it’s creation.

Deodorants have gained a bad rap due to the use of aluminum in the formulation. However, now with awareness, products are being formulated either without aluminum or with FDA approved aluminum to combat sweat and smell. However, with the use of natural or cruelty-free deodorants, there has been a shift in the market towards these products.

Not everyone is satisfied with the results, as the body becomes used to years of aluminum usage. That said, after a brief “detox” period, the body becomes accustomed to the natural products and you can rest assured that your white clothes will be stain-free, your blacktops will be streak-free and you will smell like a fresh basket of laundry.

We hope this list contains your new bestie and that the two of you embark on a beautiful journey where there are no unsightly marks, odd smells or uncomfortable wet spots. Cruelty-free is the only way to be!

And as always, no bunnies were harmed in the writing of this post.
